Reputable Rescue Organizations
By CDWA | Sentience | Rescues & Rescue Dogs | August 30, 2020
One of our overarching goals is to preserve, protect and enrich the lives of dogs. Naturally, this means we love and applaud the organizations who rescue pups and work tirelessly and selflessly to give them better lives.
Rescue organizations vary widely in their focuses, and all perform end-to-end functions. Some organizations rescue and import pups, internationally. Others work more locally to receive, assess, train, vet, foster and re-home pups who are stray, surrendered or removed from untenable circumstances.
Thinking about giving a loving home to a rescue pup? Congratulations!
The bad news. Statistics show that Parents who are not well-versed in dogs and effective, insightful parenting also surrender in high numbers. All pups need patience, understanding, training and knowledgeable parents. Rescue pups, especially so.
The good news. There are many resources available to parents to understand dogs, and in particular, two resources that provide the necessary skills to set up for optimal success: Pat Miller’s leading book, Do Over Dogs, and a Certified Trainer. These resources, together, are your power-team. A positive training-savvy parent is a skilled parent—one with the ability to give a rescued pup the advantages that are so richly deserved. Rescue parents must learn the skills to increase the chances of success.
Rescues organizations are not created equal, so work with a reputable one. The organizations listed below are voted Best-in-Class by Pet Professionals for their standards and practices. We will be adding to this list over time to include those who are working successfully, humanely and transparently across Canada.
