RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP AND GUARDIANSHIP laws, governing the treatment and welfare of animals, are in effect across the country. Animal rights are improving over time and, as they do, enforcement bodies grow in manpower and will to protect the interests of animals.
It is every citizen’s and guardian’s (pet professional) right and responsibility to know the laws that apply federally, and within his/her region. The laws apply if you own or provide guardianship, work with, or otherwise come into contact with animals, domestic and wild.
Access Canada’s federal, and your applicable provincial and municipal laws, below.
Ontario’s Dog Owners’ Liability Act also applies to owners, guardians and pet professionals when a pet is in his/her care. In other provinces, expectations are outlined in their respective municipal and Responsible Dog Owner bylaws.
Please acquaint with, and adhere to, the laws in your province or community. These laws exist to protect people and animals.
